Who Are the Dominican Sisters?

Dominican Sisters in the United States form a vibrant and diverse tapestry of faith, committed to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and action. Rooted in a legacy nearly 800 years old, they bring the Gospel to life through their dedication to education, social justice, spiritual accompaniment, art, care for creation, and service to those most in need.

Their ministries are as varied as the communities they serve—whether standing for justice on the steps of Congress, teaching in universities, offering spiritual guidance in retreat centers, planting seeds of hope in rural villages, or advocating for affordable housing in underserved neighborhoods.

What unites them are the four foundational pillars of Dominican life: Prayer, Study, Community, and Ministry.

These values shape every aspect of their lives and work, anchoring them in a shared commitment to truth (Veritas), compassion, and deep listening to the Spirit moving through the world.

Today, over 30 Dominican congregations across the United States form this dynamic network of women religious. They bring wisdom drawn from decades of experience, youthful energy from newer generations, and a collaborative spirit that bridges cultures and communities.

Whether you’re a sister, a seeker, a student, or someone inspired by justice and faith—there is a place for you in the Dominican story. Come, learn more, and be part of the ongoing journey of Gospel hope.

The Four Pillars of Dominican Life

The life and mission of Dominican Sisters are grounded in four essential pillars:

Prayer, Study, Community, and Ministry.

These pillars shape who they are, how they live, and how they respond to the needs of the world.

Prayer

Prayer is the foundation of Dominican life. It is both personal and communal, contemplative and liturgical.

Rooted in the spirit of St. Dominic, Dominican Sisters center their lives in regular rhythms of prayer—through Eucharist, the Liturgy of the Hours, quiet reflection, and shared sacred moments. Prayer grounds them in God’s love and energizes their work for justice, mercy, and peace.

Study

For Dominicans, study is a sacred practice—a lifelong commitment to seeking truth (Veritas).

It deepens their understanding of the Gospel, the world, and the signs of the times. Sisters study Scripture, theology, science, art, and the human experience, all with a desire to better serve others and make thoughtful, faith-filled responses to today’s challenges.

Community

Community is where the Dominican mission comes to life.

Sisters live, pray, and serve together, sharing resources, joys, and struggles. Community life is rooted in mutual support, accountability, and the shared pursuit of God’s dream for the world. It is a witness to the power of relationships built on love, respect, and a common purpose.

Ministry

Ministry, or preaching through action, is the outward expression of the Dominican vocation.

Sisters respond to the needs of the world in diverse and creative ways—through teaching, advocacy, pastoral care, environmental work, the arts, spiritual direction, and more. Their preaching is not only spoken from a pulpit, but lived through their presence, service, and prophetic witness in the world.
